WNXC/Radio Free Raleigh getting set for the big game tonight between the new incarnation of the 10th ranked NC State “Cardiac” Wolfpack and top-seeded UNC Tarheels at 8:30 this evening.
Hi, it’s Christine Bush. What a moment for, well, everyone, last night with a three point shot at the buzzer by the Pack to send them into overtime victory against the third-ranked Virginia Cavaliers. Their hopes for an NCAA tournament invite are now hanging precariously in the balance should the 2024 ACC trophy wind up in Raleigh and not Chapel Hill.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Tarheels are hungry for their first ACC Championship since 2016, 8 long years ago. You really don’t get a sense from them, already assured of their does of March Madness as a top seed, that they take anything for granted tonight. But there is no denying they are playing like anything less than a well-oiled machine both offensively and defensively.
So the stage is set and there is just a general bounce in the step of most everyone in the Triangle, except perhaps Duke fans, that as the ACC has grown into a larger conference that this year’s championship is between two of our own.
But yeah. NC State fans would howl with delight for an upset this night. So we’re going to dig deep into the Radio Free Raleigh rock n’ roll archive and spin some tracks for both teams. And I’ve invited two friends of the station to share their thoughts and select a song so hang tight for that this hour.
It’s ACC Championship night with a set for the Wolfpack on WNXC, home of the Radio Free Raleigh rock n’ roll archive.
AURORA: Running with the Wolves (WolfWalkers Version) , WolfWalkers (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Howlin' Wolf: The Wolf Is at Your Door (Single Version), The Chess Box
Hey! This is Kilbey, getting ready to enjoy the ACC Tournament Championship as we cheer on NC STATE. Trying to thing of songs about wolves…and I can think of a bunch of them. But I’m gonna take it back to my time at NC STATE which was late 80s into 1991, working WKNC — the best college rock station in the country. Just months after I made way into the real world, Metallica launched their fifth album: a huge departure from their thrash metal into a slower, grungy, more refined sound. And the self-titled album, also known as The Black Album, brought of course “Enter Sandman”, “The Unforgiven”, and “Nothing Else Matters”, “Wherever I May Roam”, “Sad But True”…all those great ones we know. But I’ll back The Pack with their ninth track on the album, “Of Wolf and Man.” As the lyrics say, So seek the wolf in thyself. Metallica on WNXC: Radio Free Raleigh.
Metallica: Of Wolf and Man, Metallica/The Black Album
Radiohead: Wolf At The Door. (It Girl. Rag Doll.), Hail To The Thief: Collector's Edition
Hey it’s Mark Arsen jumping in here tonight to take part in Radio Free Raleigh’s Wolf Songs set in honor of our NC STATE WOLFPACK . . . [Howwwwwwwwwl!] (Taking on The Tarheels for the ACC Championship.) So I’m gonna make my prediction: NC STATE 79, TARHEELS 78, but DON’T BET ON THAT. Of if you do, and we come out a winner, you gotta cut me in. So since we’re gonna be howling on Hillsborough Street tonight after the game…right? Are you with me? It’s “Howling For You” by The Black Keys. Radio Free Raleigh. (Go Pack!)
The Black Keys: Howlin' for You, Brothers (Deluxe Remastered Anniversary Edition)

I’m Christine Bush and I ask your indulgence for a moment here to close out this set with a few songs I’d like to dedicate to the biggest Tarheel fan I will ever know: my brother, Lee Newton, who passed away this afternoon at his home in Lillington, North Carolina. Lee attended and graduated from the University of North Carolina during those great Dean Smith years and followed UNC basketball his entire life. He will be missed and remembered. This is WNXC.
